SHEMA. LISTENING TO THE SOUNDS OF PEACE.

Kohayne and Levite Priests, marching in holy procession, carrying a mishkan, opening arks, holy gold dust and silver specks flying like parade confetti, holding a Torah like a dancing partner, waving Israeli flags and gripping their poles, Simchat Torah in the middle of the winter.

Sipping matzo ball soups, eating kosher meats, matzos covered with creamy honey sticky and sweet, overnight studies in sukkahs, ice creams on Shavuot, summer retreats in cabins around bon fires singing songs and sipping kosher grape juice, chanting blessings as a group, a Cantor there to lead us, a fun time everyday of the year, every holiday, holiday meaning holy day.

Working at Tikkun Olam during the week, fighting for a good cause, sticking your neck out to fight an injustice, marching in the street to cause change, courtroom actions for justice, an advancement of  the rights of the poor, fatherless, motherless, widows, strangers and orphans. A change in our society for the betterment of all. A chance and an opportunity for those who were not born with equal rights and who do not have choices.

Humming the Shema as a daily hymn, a reason to get up in the morning and to go to bed at night, keeping the Shema as a duty. Keeping peace as a duty, a reason to fight, a reason to keep the peace, to fight for peace, a reason to say the Shema, a reason to love others, a reason to be.

Having the rewards of the very rich, all in a mindset. Being rich in happiness, rich in our abilities to perceive joyousness, a hoopla of spirit, to praise and to love a higher power, to call this higher power G-d. To give Him/Her a name, a name that means a name, HASHEM simply means a name.

Having a higher power with a name to sing to, to give to, to keep alive, as a reason to change the world into a better place, a place where everyone has a name and justice lives like a Messiah, a Messiah of a world of peace.

Shema. Listen. Listening to the sounds of peace overcoming the beats of war. A time for all to get together and love your neighbor. Listen for the sounds of this great love and then to sleep at night in silence.
